As a strong supporter of the right to bear arms, you may own multiple firearms. Though you understand that gun safety should remain the most important factor in relation to owning such weapons, you likely also know that you need to follow certain legal stipulations in order to legally own and carry a firearm. If you hope to avoid an unexpected criminal charge, you may want to ensure that you have the proper permits.

If you would like to freely carry a weapon in Florida, you need to have a concealed weapons permit. In order to obtain this permit, you will need to meet certain eligibility requirements and provide necessary information during the application process, among other steps before obtaining this license.

Meeting eligibility requirements

If you do not meet the necessary requirements, there will be no approval of your application for a permit and you cannot carry a concealed weapon. The eligibility requirements include:

  • Being 21 years old or above
  • Having citizenship or permanent residency in the United States
  • Not having marks on your criminal record that warrant disqualification
  • Providing a Certificate of Completion

For the Certificate of Completion, you need to successfully go through a firearms safety course. After you finish the course, you will obtain your certificate. However, you should keep the original copy of your certificate for yourself and provide copies of the document for your application.

Application

In order to request a concealed weapons permit, you will need to fill out the necessary paperwork. Some information that your application will need includes:

  • Social Security number
  • Proof of identification
  • Physical address

You may also wish to note that a P.O. Box will not count as an acceptable address. In addition to this information on your paper application, you will also need to provide fingerprints and a photograph to the Division of Licensing.

Lack of permit

If you do not have a concealed weapons permit and want to have a weapon in your vehicle, your firearm should remain encased. If your weapon is out in the open in your vehicle and the police stop you, you could face serious legal charges. The consequences of such charges could have considerable impacts.

If you do find yourself in a situation that results in weapons-related charges, you may wish to find out more information on your defense options. Utilizing local legal resources could help you obtain reliable information on how to handle your predicament.
