Will my job be in jeopardy after a DUI arrest?

When potential clients ask us questions about representation for drunk driving offenses, a common concern is whether they will lose their job. As with many legal questions pertaining to DUIs, it depends on the individual circumstances surrounding each person’s situation. For example, an employer may not even know that you were arrested over the weekend and spent a night in jail. However, if you drive for a living, you may have to undergo a series of evaluations before an employment decision is made.

Nevertheless, there are a number of things you should expect after a DUI arrest that could affect your employment. This post will highlight a few.

Your insurance may be affected – Just like other moving violations (i.e. speeding, reckless driving), your insurance company has the right to terminate your current policy and charge you more for SR-22 insurance. This coverage is specifically for drivers who have DUI convictions, and it can be particularly expensive.

You may miss some time from work – As we alluded to earlier, if you were arrested over the weekend, chances are you won’t miss any time from work. However, if you were arrested on a Sunday night (or a weeknight), expect the police to run your name through several criminal databases to ensure you are not subject to any outstanding criminal warrants. This takes time. And if you are late to work (or miss work) because of it, they won’t care.

The preceding is not intended to be legal advice. Contact an experienced DUI defense attorney for additional information and advice if you have questions.
