Signs that may lead to a report of child sexual abuse

Being accused of sexually abusing a child can be ruinous. This is a particularly sensitive crime that is taken very seriously by police officers and prosecutors who will often go to great lengths to secure a conviction.

However, it is crucial to remember that if you are in this situation, you are innocent until proven guilty. There have been countless instances of parents, relatives and other adults being wrongfully accused of sexually abusing a child who are ultimately cleared of the offense. In many of these cases, a person is accused and investigated based on suspicions reported to police which are ultimately dismissed.

Any person who suspects a child is being sexually abused is required by law to submit a report. A report could be filed by a parent, teacher, doctor, day care center worker, police officer or another relative. If these people or any other parties have reason to believe a child is being abused, they must file a report.

Signs that could be a warning of abuse, according to this article, include:

  • Physical trauma to a child's genitals or mouth
  • Uncharacteristic bed-wetting
  • Depression
  • Sexual interest or behaviors not consistent with the child's age
  • Gifts of money or toys that a child receives for no reason
  • Body image and awareness issues
  • The use of adult-like language or new words when discussing private body parts

While these could certainly be signs that a child is being sexually abused, they are not clear indicators of such behavior. There may be a number of ways to explain these and other behaviors that have nothing to do with sexual abuse.

However, they can still be cause for concern and prompt someone to file a report. It is essential that any person accused of sexual abuse in light of one of these reports speak with an attorney to protect themselves against wrongful allegations. Defending yourself against these devastating accusations can be crucial for your freedom, your family and your reputation.
