The AR-15 is one of the most common and popular rifles in the country, but it is also one of the most controversial. Some have called for “assault weapons” like the AR-15 to be banned. They are designed along similar lines as military weapons — they’re auto-loaders, for instance, with a semi-automatic firing system — and they have large-capacity magazines.
Can you still purchase one in Florida, or have the laws been changed to outlaw these weapons?
As of right now, you can still buy them. Earlier this year, a proposed amendment would have subjected the AR-15 to a new ban, along with other guns classified as assault weapons. However, the amendment got rejected by lawmakers and so the ban did not go into effect.
That is not to say no changes were made. The ban was not the only bill being considered as a response to school shootings in the state. Lawmakers did decide to increase the age at which these guns can legally be purchased from 18 to 21. They also said that those with mental health problems can have their guns taken away. On top of that, teachers in Florida can now legally bring firearms to school for protective purposes.
Gun laws are always a hot-button issue, and they do change frequently. Even when the changes are not made, proposals and bills often come up in an effort to amend the laws. It is very important for residents to keep a close eye on every new piece of legislation so that they can fully understand all of their rights regarding firearms. That’s the best way to avoid legal trouble over the ones that you possess.
