A woman allegedly caused a car accident while intoxicated in Cape Coral, Florida, and the police arrested her when they arrived at the scene.
Reports indicate that the young woman ran into the rear-end of the next car, which caused that driver to lose control of the vehicle and spin out. Debris flew all over the road and caused damage to a third vehicle. The wreck happened on Del Prado Boulevard on Monday, Sept. 24.
The woman, who is 21 years old, was not alone in the car. Her boyfriend was riding with her, and they had their infant — who was just 3 months old — in the back seat. Reports do not indicate that anyone was injured in the accident.
All the same, she is now facing charges for drunk driving with a minor in the car, causing property damage and apparently threatening a public servant.
According to the police officers who responded, the woman admitted she was drunk at the scene. She was also slurring her words, they say, and she repeatedly asked if she could remove her pants, though she was only wearing a swimsuit.
After the arrest, the officers took her to the Lee County Jail.
This story does a good job of illustrating how the charges in a DUI case can change depending on the circumstances. Things like having a child in the car could make the potential sentence stricter than it would be otherwise. This is why it is so important for those who are accused of driving under the influence to know all the legal rights that they have.
